The Influence of Personal Information Exchange on Creating Personal Relationship through Computer Mediated Communication

The possible influence of personal information exchange in computer mediated communication (CMC) is examined in a social psychological experiment.
The experiment was conducted in 2 (face to face or computer mediated using Video-Chat) by 2 (with personal information or without personal information) conditions. Two groups of participants (two people for each group) were asked to work for a group task, which requires them to work as a team. In "with personal information" condition, personal information is disclosed for each participants, while in "without personal information" condition, personal information of each participant is not disclosed.
In CMC, communication channels are restricted and socio-emotional cues are not easy to exchange compared to face to face communication, which indicates close relationship is difficult to build in CMC. However, the results clearly show the possibility that personal information exchange develop personal relationships, even in computer based collaboration. Core ideas to create personal relationships in CMC and further necessity of research in CMC to find out the means to develop informal organization are discussed.
